Selcoth Forestry (ID: 103000000017258)
Description
The Selcoth Forestry group comprises diverse, mixed woodlands designed to achieve multiple benefits on land previously managed for sheep grazing near to Moffat, south Scotland. These benefits all contribute towards farm diversification, with main aims being to create a sustainable future timber resource in balance with the protection and enhancement of biodiversity on site.
Both projects are highly visible on a main trunk road and aim to improve the local landscape by providing colourful mixed woodlands designed to suit the landform and ecological conditions.
Forest management approaches maximise structural variation of each woodland and take account of the site’s prominence in the landscape, i.e. Continuous Cover Forestry is used for productive broadleaves, clearfell for conifers and retention of low-density native broadleaves. The combination of tree species and management types used should ensure that these woodlands are resilient to climate change, pests, diseases and extreme weather events.
