Topps Wood (ID: 103000000004408)
Forest Carbon Ltd
The site extends to 23 ha gross. The area which is plantable (allowing for wayleaves and designed open ground) extends to 15.75 ha. This was planted over the next three years., ie starting phase 1 in Spring 2009 (7.91 ha), phase 2 in Spring 10 ( 3.94 ha) and phase 3 in Spring 11 (3.92 ha).
The principle objective of the scheme is to mitigate against climate change (through sequestration of carbon). Additional objectives are biodiversity and landscape improvements and facilitating an educational programme.
The woodland will be 25% conifer and 75% native broadleaf (based on NVC11 (upland oak birch mix.) The conifer component will complement the existing, adjacent, conifer woodland to the South on Tarduff Hill. The broadleaves will complement and extend the existing woodland habitat networks to the adjacent Carron Glen (to the North.)
A phase 1 habitat survey did not reveal anything which would be adversely affected by woodland planting. The Forestry Commission have determined that an EIA is not required.
There are some minor watercourses running through the site (<1m width) and the River Carron itself skirts the north western edge of the site. Best practices will be followed to ensure that these features are treated sensitively.
