The aim of the project is to extend and link existing and new woodlands within Bishopdale. The various sites, covering 48.2ha (net) are situated on the upper reaches of Bishopdale Beck.
The planting specification was drawn up by the Senior Trees and Woodlands Officer at the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority in consultation with the landowner, Forestry Commission and the Parish Council. Consultation involved other specialists on subjects including landscape, Archaeology, Ecology and public access.
The main part of the scheme is a mixed woodland that benefits the area by linking existing woodlands along with providing habitat for species such as Black Grouse and red squirrels. The remaining woodland areas are smaller but equally important in that they link the otherwise scares woodlands within this dale.
The woodland habitat is based on a native woodland and the management will be non intervention in that the woodland will develop without thinning or intensive management. The woodlands are clearly visible from the minor, but well used road that connects the north and the south of the national park.
