The Ward Mill Dam Removal project will improve free flowing aquatic habitat in the Watauga River for several aquatic species including the eastern Hellbender and Green floater mussel. Removal of this dam will result in an absolute gain of 140 miles of connected stream.
The project is expected to produce numerous environmental benefits such as improved fish/aquatic passage, improved sediment transport, improved large woody debris recruitment, improved public safety, as well as enhanced water temperature and chemistry.
