Description
Dere Street is in the Moorfoot Hills, southeast of Edinburgh. Situated in Heriot, 6km northwest of Oxton, the site is 31 ha that is currently used as pasture. Dere Street is named after the Roman road that runs adjacent to the site, from York to Edinburgh. The surrounding land is currently used as productive conifer woodland and rough grazing. The owners intend on planting the land as a productive conifer woodland that is sensitive to the site conditions and in-keeping with the landscape. The site has a catena of soil types, transitioning from alluvial soils at the bottom of the hill around Armet Water, into peaty gleys, then podzols from the centre of the site to the west, gleys in the east and finally brown soils in the north. The site has a southeast facing aspect, rising from 295 meters above sea level at the southmost extent, to 350 meters at the northmost. No notable species (defined by 2016 JNCC spreadsheet of taxa designations and Scottish Borders Biodiversity Action Plan) were identified by independent habitat, vegetation and GWDTE survey. However, from desk-based study soprano pipistrelle, mountain hare, curlew spotted flycatcher and lapwing have been identified in the wider area. There are no identified invasive species in the area. There are no issues pertaining to biodiversity relating to the site. There are no statutory designations, ancient woodlands or deep peats.
Objectives:
• Grow a high-quality crop of commercial conifers.
• Extend and join up existing woodlands.
• Enhance and maintain conservation and biodiversity value.
• Improve landscape diversity.
