The Freshwater Trust removed invasive plants and installed native riparian vegetation on a portion of Bear Creek, a tributary to the Rogue River in Jackson County, Oregon, between the cities of Phoenix and Medford. Bear Creek provides critical habitat for salmonids and other fish and wildlife species. Much of the riparian vegetation in this section of the basin has been altered, dramatically reduced in number and diversity, though this site was not affected by the Almeda Fire of 2020. Once restored, this section of the waterway will provide long-term shade to the system, enhance native fish and wildlife habitat and improve riparian function. Jackson County, the landowner, has granted The Freshwater Trust access to the site for the 20 year life of the project for the purposes of monitoring and maintenance.
